Nine Men's Morris

Goal and setup

Two players each have nine stones. The board starts empty. Reduce your opponent to two stones, or leave them with no legal move after the placement phase.

Placing, moving and flying

Take turns placing one stone on any empty intersection. Once both players have placed all nine stones, take turns moving one stone along a line to an adjacent empty intersection. Stones cannot jump over other stones.

When you have exactly three stones left on the board after placement, you may fly: move one of them to any empty intersection, whether adjacent or not.

The four lines pointing towards the center stop at the inner square. There is no intersection or connection across the center.

Closing a mill

Three of your stones in a row along a board line form a mill. Whenever you close a mill by placing or moving, remove one opposing stone. Choose a stone outside a mill. If all opposing stones belong to mills, you may remove any of them.

Closing two mills with one stone still permits only one capture. You may open a mill and close it again on a later turn to capture another stone.

End of the game

After both supplies are empty, a player loses if they have fewer than three stones or cannot move any stone. Captures during placement do not end the game before placement is complete.

Players may agree to a draw using the framework's End game menu. There is no automatic repetition or move-count draw in this Yucata variant. Giving up is also available in that menu.

Playing on Yucata

Select a highlighted intersection to place a stone. To move, select your stone, then a highlighted destination. Select the stone again or press Escape to cancel the selection. A mill opens a separate capture step. Confirm the completed turn using the normal framework control; until then, Undo and Redo can change each decision.

The standard move log records placement, movement and capture separately using the board coordinates. Select log entries to inspect past positions, or use replay and its speed controls. Board coordinates appear when you hover over or focus a coordinate in the log; its intersection is highlighted. An outlined empty point marks the last capture. Light stones are plain and dark stones have an inner ring; displayed colors follow player preferences.
